School Hours

  • 08:00 – 12:30 – gates open at 07:15.
  • Children must be here in the classroom by 08:00. The vehicle entrance will close at 08:00.
  • Please bring children to their teacher and do not leave them at the gate.
  • Please provide the office with a list of lift clubs.
  • Messages regarding lifts must be given to the teachers by way of a note or telephonically.
  • Verbal messages from children will not be accepted.
  • In the interests of safety, parents are expected to ensure that the security gate is closed behind them.
  • Please do not bring children later than 08:00 or fetch them earlier than the official closing time of 12:30 unless it is absolutely necessary. Besides disrupting the rest of the class, the children miss out on important activities.
  • Children are to be fetched promptly at the official closing time of 12:30, unless they attend Aftercare.
  • Parents are requested not to linger in the playground once they have collected their children.
  • Children will be sent to the bench in the kitchen passage to wait and will not be allowed in the playground.

Communication

It is very important, in case of an emergency, that we are able to contact a child’s parents at any time.

Please make sure that we have up to date contact numbers.

Please let us know of any change of address, emails, etc. The office is open for messages all morning.

Should you wish to speak to a teacher, you may contact them at break between 11:00 and 11:30.

Lunch

Please ensure that your child has sufficient food in their lunch packs. E.g. sandwich, yoghurt, fruit, juice etc. (NO GLASS BOTTLES) Health bars, fruit sticks or popcorn are permitted.

Sweets, chocolates, crisps are not permitted.

The above applies to aftercare as well.

Picnic lunches will be requested when we go on outings. These must please come in labelled plastic packets and in disposable containers. i.e. no plastic lunch boxes or juice bottles.

Aftercare

An aftercare facility for Beachwood Pre-Primary children and Summerwood Grade 1s, 2s and 3s is provided from 12:30 until 17:30.

Birthdays

These will be celebrated at school with a birthday ring. This is not a replacement for any birthday party you may wish to organise for your child and may not be used as such.  Therefore, no party packs will be permitted.

Please provide a cake for the birthday ring and arrange a date, in advance, with the teacher.

A donation towards a library book on your child’s birthday would be appreciated.

These will be purchased by the Principal and the child’s name will be inscribed on the inside cover of the book chosen by the child.

Toys

Children are not permitted to bring any toys to school. If they do, these will be kept in a safe place until home time.

From time to time requests might be made for the interest table.

Clothing and Jewellery

All outer clothing must be marked.

Children must be appropriately dressed for the weather.

Caps or hats are required in summer.

Please do not overdress your child as they find it difficult to run and play if they are too hot.

Slip slops / Gum Boots are difficult to play in and may need to be removed outdoors.

Avoid drawstrings on clothes, the strings tend to catch on climbing equipment and are therefore dangerous.

A change of clothing is advisable, especially for the younger children.

The only jewellery permitted at school is small stud earrings. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings etc. all catch on clothing and equipment and may cause injuries to children. Any jewellery worn to school will be removed.

Outings

You will be notified in advance when we intend taking the children on outings.

N.B. Arrangements for outings are dependent on the availability of lifts. We are always short of transport so when we approach you for assistance please help wherever you can.

Beachwood T-Shirts and proper shoes must be worn on outings. Children will not be taken barefoot.

When picnic lunches are requested please note that these need to be in disposable containers. No lunch boxes and cooldrink bottles will be taken on outings.

Library

Friday is library day for Grade Rs.

Your child will be given a library book to take home each Friday. It must be returned before the following Friday.

Books are expensive so please make sure that your child looks after the book and brings it back in good condition. No books will be given out if the previous Fridays book was not returned.

You will be required to pay R100 for any library book that is lost or not returned.

Baker Day and Laundry

At the start of each term you will be given a roster for the above.

You will be allocated a Friday or two during the year to take the laundry (towels and tablecloths) from your child’s class home for washing and these are to be returned on the Monday. (No ironing required).

On that same Friday you will be requested to provide a cake, cookies, popcorn, biscuits or ice cream cones, sufficient to be divided amongst the children in that class. Please no lollipops or hard sweets.  Your child is “Baker-Person” and sells his wares to the other children for R5.00.

Each child therefore needs to bring R5.00 each Friday. (The idea is that the children learn to work with money and provide a little in the way of funds for the school).

General Health

Please ensure that your child goes to bed early.  Suggested time between 19:00 – 20:00.

Children must have breakfast.

Our lunch break is usually between 10:30 and 10:45.

Please keep a child who is ill at home. A sick child is unable to cope with the day and we do not have a sick bay or staff to look after the child.

During movement and music rings, the child will be required to remove their jersey and shoes. Often a child says, “my Mom says I am not allowed to”. Please explain the above to your child. Shoes and jersey will be put back on after the activity.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE STAFF ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY CHILDREN WHO ARE LEFT UNATTENDED AT THE GATE PRIOR TO THE OFFICIAL OPENING TIME.

Please note that we are aware of the congestion in the parking area at peak dropping off and collection times.

The safety of the children is our primary concern so please exercise caution in the parking area and ensure that the children do not wander around this area unattended.
