Welcome!

Beachwood Pre-Primary, located in Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth caters for Grade 0’s (children turning 5)
to Grade R’s (children turning 6).  We follow a CAPS curriculum.

We believe that play is vital in the life of a pre-schooler and therefore we have a lot of
opportunity for the children to play both inside and outside.

Our Story

Beachwood Pre-Primary has been around for many years.  It used to operate from the Boardwalk side of 2nd Avenue.  In 1992 Beachwood and Summerstrand Jewish Nursery school, which operated from what is now a church on Brighton Drive, decided to amalgamate.  The 2 schools then continued to occupy the 2nd Avenue building.  When the plans were drawn up for the Boardwalk it was realised that Beachwood would have to move.  Summerwood very graciously allowed Emfulweni, who built the Boardwalk, to use a piece of their land to construct the very beautiful school that we have today.  Beachwood moved into its new premises in the September school holidays of 2000.

Mission & Vision

Beachwood a school where children are loved and where they love to learn.

What We Offer

Beachwood Pre-Primary has 3 classes.  One class of Grade 0’s (children turning 5) and 2 classes of Grade R’s (children turning 6).  We usually have up to 25 children per class but with Covid protocols in place we have lowered this number in order to allow social distancing in the classrooms.  Our medium of instruction is English.  We open at 7:15am for drop off but school starts at 8am.  Our day runs until 12:30pm.  We also offer an aftercare facility which operates until 5:30pm each day during the school term.  Our Grade 1, 2 and 3 friends from Summerwood join us in the afternoons.

Although we receive no funding from the Department of Education, we are still considered a Departmental school and we follow a CAPS curriculum.  Each day we do language and maths lessons as well as creative activities.  We believe that play is vital in the life of a pre-schooler and therefore we have a lot of opportunity for the children to play both inside and outside.  Our garden has to be one of the most welcoming spaces and we have the most beautiful climbing tree, a flat artificial grass area for ball games, 2 sandpits, a road for our bicycles, a glorious mud kitchen as well as amazing climbing frames.

Included in our weekly programme are Xhosa and music lessons as well as a Knowledge Network computer lesson every second week for the Grade R’s.
